We the People: Reflecting on Augusta University's Constitution Day Observance

Augusta University recently honored Constitution Day, marking the 238th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution's signing on September 17, 1787.

Faculty, staff, and students gathered for a public reading of the Constitution, emphasizing the document's enduring significance.

David Kearns, the university's federal depository library manager, remarked, "The Constitution is the umbrella under which our government operates."

He added, "Democracy is not a spectator sport; you have to be informed, you have to know what you are doing and be involved."

Educational institutions receiving federal funds are mandated to hold programs about the U.S. Constitution for students.

Among the 39 signatories of the Constitution was William Few from Georgia.

David Bulla, chair of the Department of Communication at Augusta University, noted, "One of the people who signed the Constitution from Georgia is William Few, and we have a street in Columbia County named after him."

He emphasized the local connection, stating, "It’s really important to realize that this is not something that just happened; it's part of the history of those 13 original colonies, including Georgia and Augusta, an important city at that time."

As America approaches its 250th birthday next year, Constitution Day serves as a reminder of the document’s continuing relevance.

Bulla reflected, "We need to take time like today to stand back and reflect on how the government was made, how it is, and of course with the amendments, how it’s changed over the course of 200 years."

Kearns emphasized the importance of the founding documents.

"The history is important, but it’s just as important today to be engaged in these documents to understand the foundations of the democracy that we engage in," he said.

In addition to the reading, the university hosted a Constitution-themed quiz, engaging students and the campus community in a fun and educational manner.

These activities underscore Augusta University's commitment to fostering civic awareness and participation among its students and the broader community.

As the nation nears its 250th anniversary, such observances highlight the enduring relevance of the Constitution in contemporary society.
