We the People: Reflecting on Augusta University's Constitution Day Observance

Augusta University celebrated Constitution Day, marking 238 years since the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787.

Students, faculty, and staff gathered for a public reading of the Constitution, underscoring its lasting importance in American democracy.

David Kearns, the university’s federal depository library manager, stressed the need for public engagement and understanding of the Constitution.

He reminded participants that democracy thrives only when citizens are informed and involved.

The event also highlighted Georgia’s role in history, noting that William Few—one of the original signatories—hailed from the state, a connection still felt locally.

The university added to the observance with a lively Constitution-themed quiz, deepening civic awareness among participants.

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, Augusta University’s Constitution Day observances remind the community of the document’s enduring relevance and the need for ongoing civic participation.
